Gastroenterology

This department started functioning since 2014. The department runs regular OPD and endoscopy sessions. The department has most modern video upper GI scope and colonoscope  with facilities of narrow band imaging & Foot pump.
Upper GI scopy includes routine diagnostic work, banding of oesophageal varices, sclerotherapy of oesophageal and gastric varices, dilatation of oesophageal strictures, and foreign body removal. Stenting of malignant oesophageal strictures, Polypectomy, Endoscopic nasogastric & nasojejunal tube placement and haemorrhoidal banding are also undertaken. Selectron therapy of oesophageal malignacies are regularly done. Lower GI scopies include colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Now, two Consultants are here to run regular OPD & endoscopy sessions everyday.
This department caters a lot of hepatology work. Many cases of acute hepatitis as well as chronic liver disease attend the gastro OPD regularly and undergo inpatient treatment if required. A good number of inflammatory bowel disease cases in addition to pancreatitis are managed in the department. This department functions as a referral unit to many of the hospitals of Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad district.
